What the test exist of :

In order to become a fully qualified driver the learner will need to pass three tests:

♦ The Theory Test
♦ Hazard Perception Test
♦ The Practical Driving Test

Before the practical test can be taken you must prepare and take the theory and hazard perception tests. These are taken together and the learner driver needs to pass both before they can take the practical test. This is usually about six weeks after your application is made but this may vary, depending on your locality.

The theory test

This test is made up of a group of 50 multiple choice questions. These questions are selected arbitrarily from a store of over a thousand and cover all the major driving practices. Students have 57 minutes to complete the test and 43 or more questions have to be answered correctly to pass the test.

The hazard perception test

This is the second part of the theory test and examines the student’s ability to spot and deal with potential hazards on the road. You will be shown a group of 14 video clips each one minute in duration showing potential hazards on the road, some involving pedestrians, road conditions and other road users, cyclists, motorcyclists and car drivers. There will be 15 hazards to identify. Each answer is worth up to five points but it depends on the speed which the student identifies the hazard. To pass this test the student has to attain a minimum of 4 out of a possible 75.
The theory and hazard perception test costs £31.00 and the student will have to study the CD Rom and other books relating to the test in order to prepare for it. These can be bought from Amazon new or used. www.amazon.co.uk

The practical driving test

This is where all the practical skills you’ve practised in your driving lessons are tested. The practical driving test is the third and final part to passing your test. You will taken out driving by an examiner who will expect you to demonstrate how proficient and safe a driver you are and how you can deal with various driving conditions. You will also be expected to demonstrate two out of the three reversing manoeuvres that you learnt with your instructor.  The examiner will also instruct when to perform an emergency stop and ask you two questions about vehicle safety checks, one where you will demonstrate that you know how to do a safety check and also to describe the process.

The test will take 40 minutes to and to pass the candidate must drive without any serious faults and allowed no more 15 minor errors in order to pass. The cost of the test is £62.00 if taken during the week and £75.00 if taken in the evening and weekend. If the student is unlucky and fails the test they will have to retake only the practical driving test again. The theory test result is not affected by the result
